The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, requested this Friday that the coercive measures against Venezuela, that are more criminal in times of pandemic, be lifted. She also recognized the progress made by her Office with the Venezuelan government, within the framework of the Memorandum of Understanding signed on September 20, 2019, the only working official instrument of this United Nations body with Venezuela on human rights.
“I would like to reiterate my call to lift the economic sanctions to facilitate the allocation of resources during the pandemic,” she stressed at the 45th Ordinary Period of Sessions of the UN Human Rights Council, the official warned that “the imposition of additional sanctions to the diesel exports’, can exacerbate gasoline shortages and hamper the distribution of essential goods according to the Venezuelan Foreign Affairs Ministry.

In this sense, the High Commissioner recognized the progress of her Office in technical cooperation with the Venezuelan government, while showing the political will of the head of state, Nicolás Maduro for the peace of the country, with the pardon of 110 political actors of the country, as well as the implementation of biosafety protocols related to the Covid-19 pandemic in detention centers and efforts to care for Venezuelans migrants returning to their country from South American nations hard hit by Covid-19.
“We will continue to provide technical assistance to the government,” said the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.
This Thursday, President Maduro reported that his government is planning a meeting with the High UN Official, in order to share visions and advances in human rights in the South American nation.
But Bachelet — at the same time — also complained about recent Venezuelan Supreme Court rulings on the internal life of seven political parties and on the “non-consensual” appointment of electoral authorities in the National Electoral council (CNE)
