Cuba: We do Not Have the Right to Cultural Ingenuity

One after another the foreign TV shows seem to take up long hours at night in thousands of Cuban homes, or on mobile devices through the Internet; there, comfortably positioned, as one who is preparing to see the most anticipated show of the moment, millions of viewers and cyber-navigators, including dozens and dozens of children, let their imagination fly to the most dissimilar stages where reality shows or soap operas, show the “benefits” of a way of life or of a consumerist society that is committed to making us believe in the wonder of its surface, without letting us look at the rust of its foundations, proclaims a freedom of expression that implies knowledge of reality, but many times it is fantasy, and not rarely, a delirium.
The vast majority claim to find nothing wrong in a little fun, allowing or even managing the next chapter of the most coveted series, the most anticipated soap opera, or the show of the moment. They argue as a justification for the deficiencies in national TV programs (in which they do not cease to be right) and ensure that entertainment is needed, as an amulet to scare off the worries of the real world, leaving high doses of subtle venom inoculated, without lending any resistance, because -as Graciela Pogolotti stated- “through all these modern means (of reproduction) there is a receiver that accommodates itself uncritically to consume this product”. Marshall McLuhan already said “the medium is the message”.

It does not mean that one have to be against foreign audiovisual productions per se and only because of the fact of coming from the capitalist market, since there are many examples of good filmography or excellent content, I think that the core is knowing how to discern and balance the options, to avoid, as Abel Prieto warned, that we end up suffering from what he called “the frivolity of the culturally colonized”, which in his words “already gave up the pleasure of intelligence. ”
It would be absurd that we intend to convince the new generations about these cultural stalks, trusting that this task will be fully accomplished only in class shifts or through the Round Table, the TV News or the pages of our newspapers.
Abel Prieto himself expressed on this subject a cardinal idea, when in his essay on the fable of the Cicada and the Ant, he said: “It is not possible to exercise daytime anti-imperialism and surrender at night to the subcultural drug of the empire: in the long run Dr. Jeckyll is going to lose control over that pro-yanqui Mister Hyde, and we will attend a remake (quite literal) of Stevenson’s fable ”.
We have no right to cultural ingenuity that can easily open the doors (already ajar by persistent gusts of wind ) of our house so that banality and consumerist selfishness are installed, of which there are already some manifestations that evidently come from the little critical sense before the overwhelming message that is sent to us, through which it is constantly said that triumph and wealth is there and that the proof can be found on the “harmless” screen inside our own house, sometimes turned into the sweet hollow where the ostrich hides its head.
As Cubans and above all as revolutionaries, we have a duty to overcome, over the easy and epidermal taste, another greater and sometimes more complex taste to understand; but in the long run, more durable and protective, the pleasure of knowing how to interpret the hidden signs, discarding them from the superfluous and understanding the essences, to avoid that world that once described Frei Betto, and in which “there is no space left for poetry or time to enjoy childhood. We lost the ability to dream without winning in return all but emptiness, perplexity, loss of identity. In chemical doses, happiness seems more viable than traveling the challenging path of education and subjectivity ”

NO TENEMOS DERECHO A LA INGENUIDAD CULTURAL
Uno tras otro van apareciendo los programas televisivos foráneos que pasan a ocupar largas horas en las noches de miles de hogares cubanos, o en los dispositivos móviles a través de internet; allí, cómodamente posicionados, como quien se apresta a ver el espectáculo más esperado del momento, millones de televidentes y ciber – navegantes, incluidos decenas y decenas de niños y niñas, dejan volar su imaginación hasta los más disímiles escenarios donde los reality show o los dramatizados, muestran las ¨bondades¨ de una forma de vida o de una sociedad de consumo que apuesta por hacernos creer en la maravilla de su superficie, sin dejarnos mirar la herrumbre de sus cimientos, pregona una libertad de expresión que supone el conocimiento de la realidad, pero muchas veces se trata de una fantasía, y no pocas veces de un delirio.
La gran mayoría afirma no encontrar nada malo en un poco de diversión, permitiendo o incluso gestionando el próximo capítulo de la serie más codiciada, la novela más esperada, o el show del momento. Arguyen como justificación las carencias en las programaciones nacionales de TV (en lo cual no dejan de tener su razón) y aseguran que el entretenimiento hace falta, como amuleto para espantar las preocupaciones del mundo real, dejándose inocular altas dosis de sutil veneno, sin prestar resistencia alguna, pues como afirmó Graciela Pogolotti: “a través de todos estos medios modernos (de reproducción) hay un receptor que se acomoda acríticamente a consumir este producto”. Ya lo decía Marshall McLuhan “el medio es el mensaje”
No significa que se deba estar en contra de las producciones audiovisuales foráneas per sé y solo por el hecho de provenir del mercado capitalista, pues son muchos los ejemplos de buena filmografía o de excelentes materiales seriados, creo que de lo que se trata es de saber discernir y balancear las opciones, para evitar, como alertó Abel Prieto, que terminemos padeciendo aquello que él llamó “la frivolidad del colonizado cultural”, que según sus palabras “ya renunció al placer de la inteligencia”.
Sería absurdo que pretendamos convencer a las nuevas generaciones sobre estas acechanzas culturales, confiando en que esa tarea se cumplirá a cabalidad solo en los turnos de clase o a través de la Mesa Redonda, el Noticiero de Televisión o las páginas de nuestros periódicos.
El propio Abel Prieto plasmó sobre este tema una idea cardinal, cuando en su ensayo sobre la fábula de la Cigarra y al Hormiga, afirmó: “No es posible ejercer antiimperialismo diurno y entregarse en la noche a la droga subcultural del imperio: a la larga el Doctor Jeckyll va a perder el control sobre ese Mister Hyde proyanqui, y asistiremos a un remake (bastante literal) de la fábula de Stevenson”
No tenemos derecho a la ingenuidad cultural que puede fácilmente abrir las puertas (ya entreabiertas por insistentes ráfagas de viento) de nuestra casa para que se instale el huésped de la banalidad y el egoísmo consumista del cual ya existen algunas manifestaciones que evidentemente provienen del poco sentido crítico ante el mensaje avasallador que se nos manda, a través del cual se dice constantemente que el triunfo y la riqueza están allí y que la prueba puede encontrase en la “inofensiva “ pantalla dentro de nuestra propia casa, convertida a veces en el dulce hueco donde el avestruz esconde su cabeza.
Como cubanos y sobre todo como revolucionarios estamos en el deber de sobreponer, por sobre el gusto fácil y epidérmico, otro gusto mayor y a veces más complejo de entender; pero a la larga, más duradero y protector, el gusto de saber interpretar las señas ocultas, desechar de ellas lo superfluo y entender las esencias, para evitar ese mundo que en una ocasión describió Frei Betto, y en el cual “ ya no queda espacio para la poesía ni tiempo para gozar la infancia. Perdimos la capacidad de soñar sin ganar a cambio sino el vacío, la perplejidad, la pérdida de identidad. En dosis químicas, la felicidad nos parece más viable que recorrer el desafiante camino de la educación y de la subjetividad”
