President Nicolás Maduro said that the appointment of the new National Electoral Council’s (CNE) board, by the Constitutional Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice, was “a consensual decision.”
The head of state reported that the Constitutional Chamber held an initiative of consultation with all sectors to make a decision that took place on Friday night with the swearing in of the authorities of the CNE. Maduro said that the magistrates verified that the National Assembly had not had the qualified majority to designate the new CNE and consequently declared a legislative omission “within the framework of the Constitution.”

Enumerating all these steps taken, Maduro concluded that this new CNE is the result of the dialogue process through two tables with two opposition blocks: one, represented by Claudio Fermín, Timoteo Zambrano, Henry Falcón and Javier Bertucci, among others and, another with the G4 where AD, Primero Justicia, Voluntad Popular and Un Nuevo Tiempo are. “I met with everyone,” said the head of state, who in turn is president of the PSUV.
Maduro described the new members of the electoral branch as “a people with great experience who comes to give a new dynamism and organize the elections for a new National Assembly, which by mandate of the Constitution must be held in 2020 with the participation of all political parties.”
In this sense, the Venezuelan president ordered the Defense Minister, Vladimir Padrino López, to organize the Republic Plan, meaning the security and logistical protocol to guarantee elections in Venezuela. “We will abide by the decisions of the new CNE,” he said.
Maduro called for the electoral route to be embraced because “all the conditions are in place.”
