This Monday, August 18, United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV) Secretary General Diosdado Cabello asserted that leftist division was the cause of the left’s defeat in Bolivia’s presidential elections, referring to this outcome as unfair to Bolivians.
“What’s sad is… that comrades facing the historical enemy can’t agree or guarantee unity for their people,” he said during a PSUV press conference. “It is as if they forget what happens when the right governs.”
He said that those who failed to reach agreement will face equal persecution under Bolivia’s upcoming right-wing government.
“They divided the popular movement into factions without consensus… This injustice to Bolivians extends to global liberation movements,” he added.
Cabello said comparisons with Venezuela were irrelevant but credited Venezuela’s leadership with supporting the Bolivarian Revolution: “Some here distanced themselves—former allies who tried dividing our revolutionary movement. But Venezuela has conscious leadership and people.”
He attributed Bolivia’s divisions to personal ambitions. “Here, we are united today, tomorrow, and for 20 more years. We know our historical enemy and will defeat them,” Cabello added.
Guayana Esequiba
Cabello insisted that no International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruling binds Venezuela after its protest over Guyana’s operations in undelimited territory.
“Everything west of the Essequibo River belongs to Venezuela—non-negotiable. The ICJ can issue any ruling; it is not binding on us,” he stated regarding ExxonMobil’s One Guyana vessel starting operations in the Stabroek Block, off the coast of Venezuela’s state of Guayana Esequiba.

He recalled that Venezuela’s December 3, 2023, referendum saw massive turnout and that opposition sectors even recognized the 1966 Geneva Agreement as the conflict’s only legal solution. Extreme opposition factions “planning to surrender Venezuela to imperialism ignored it,” said Cabello.
Venezuela consistently reaffirms that the 1966 Geneva Agreement – which Guyana seeks to void – “is the only practical solution to this territorial dispute,” noted Cabello. “We urge Guyana to cease its erratic conduct violating international law and honor its dialogue commitments.”
