The Deputy minister for North America of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Carlos Ron, rejected this Sunday, December 23, the position of the United States Government in relation to the recent incident between Venezuela and the Cooperative Republic of Guyana over the incursion of two ships into [undisputed] Venezuelan waters.
Through his account on Twitter, the Venezuelan diplomat asked the US Administration to deal with their problems and respect the international law and sovereignty of Venezuela.
“Instead of trying to ignite conflicts between peaceful neighbors in the name of business interests, the US Government should, for the first time, respect international law and Venezuelan sovereignty. Take care of your own problems”, he wrote.
This message from Ron was in response to the statement by the Under Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs, Kimberly Breier, who called on the Government of Venezuela to respect international laws and the rights of its neighboring countries.
In context
Two ships hired by the transnational Exxon Mobil raid on Saturday, December 22, in [UNDISPUTED] maritime territory of Venezuela, to carry out seismic explorations. Both vessels illegally obtained the permission of the Government of Guyana to carry out such maneuvers.
The boats had the flag of Bahamas (Ramford Tethys) and of Trinidad and Tobago (Delta Monarch). The Venezuelan government described the incident as a clear violation of its sovereignty, and indicated through a statement that they informed the secretary general of the United Nations (UN) about the incident.
