Venezuela’s Foreign Minister Yván Gil questioned the recent statements made by the Spanish Foreign Minister, JosĂ© Manuel Albares, who described as “insults and slander” the statements issued by President Nicolás Maduro against the president of Spain’s Popular Party (PP), Alberto Núñez FeijĂło.
The controversy stems from statements issued by the Venezuelan head of state on September 29, after the leader of the PP (Feijoó) appeared publicly in Madrid offering support to the former Venezuelan far-right presidential candidate Edmundo González at a rally.
In this regard, Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yván Gil spoke out on social media, expressing his opinion that the attitude of the Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs, in terms of supporting the representative of the PP, is due to the fact that he has been “blackmailed by far-right extremists.”
“We don’t know if Mr. Albares is acting out of fear of a power beyond his government, or out of his own conviction,” wrote FM Gil. “Now he seems proud to place himself on the right of the Popular Party.”
“Blackmailed by far-right extremists, he has managed to make Spain the preferred refuge for drug traffickers, murderers, and terrorists who have done much harm in Venezuela. Enough of so many insults!” added the Venezuelan foreign minister.
Finally, the Venezuelan top diplomat warned that “more than 200 years ago, we drove the Spanish empire from our lands. We won our independence with blood and fire. Rest assured that we will know how to make it respected today and always.”
Colombia’s FM Murillo
In another social media post, the Venezuelan foreign minister spoke out against Colombia’s foreign minister, Luis Gilberto Murillo, after the Colombian official insisted that Colombia will not recognize the Venezuelan July 28 presidential election results until doubts about its legitimacy and legality are clear.
“Enough of rude interference and of seeking headlines that only the paramilitary and fascist right enjoys; we will not tolerate it, FM Murillo,” wrote Gil. “Neither you nor any Colombian institution have the right, much less the moral authority, to speak about Venezuela. It is not a matter that concerns you. It is definitely not your problem.”
Publication of Venezuela’s Election Results: To Be or Not To Be?
Despite the July 28 presidential election results being recognized by the majority of Venezuelans and ratified by the Venezuelan Supreme Court (TSJ) in its August 22 ruling, to date, the Venezuelan Electoral Council (CNE) has not published in the Electoral Gazette, or in any other media source, the poll-by-poll electoral results, as requested by the same TSJ ruling. On August 26, the CNE issued a statement in which they assured that they would publish the results as requested. This incongruence and possible breach of legality only serves to maintain the international pressure on Venezuela’s democracy, according to many experts, including Chavistas and supporters of Maduro’s mandate.
In the exchange with his Colombian counterpart, the Venezuelan foreign minister added that “although the Colombian oligarchy, allied with its gringo bosses, dislikes revolutionary governments, such as that of President Nicolás Maduro, here, the Venezuelan people spoke loud and clear: we do not owe you or your decrepit congress any explanations. Dedicate yourselves to your own problems, which you must have enough of.”
