75 years after that May 9, 1945, let us honor the peoples of the USSR who rendered incalculable service to humanity
By Abel Prieto – May 9, 2020
May 9 marks the Day of Victory over Nazi Germany. It was defeated by the USSR, by the exploits of its officers and soldiers and the extraordinary will of resistance of the civilian population, of the elderly, women and children.
After suffering very costly setbacks against German armed forces at the hands of the “invincible” Wehrmacht, the Red Army achieved a very important triumph in the Battle of Moscow, which frustrated Hitler’s plan to occupy the Soviet capital. The victories of Stalingrad and Kursk in 1943 and, in 1944, the offensive of Operation Bagratión were transcendent.

The troops of the USSR stopped Germany’s advance, destroyed its war machine and decapitated the monster of Nazism. They broke into Berlin in April 1945 and waved the red flag atop the Reichstag.
But the hegemonic cultural and information industry has set out to misrepresent history and deny this victory. They have tried to convince the world that “the saviors” (in the most typical Hollywood style) were the US military who landed on “D-Day” in Normandy. They want to ignore the decisive and thousand times heroic role of the USSR, which at the cost of the lives of 27 million of its children imposed surrender on the Third Reich.
They also hide the delay in opening the western front against Hitler agreed on by the Allies. Recall that the future President Truman, being a senator from Missouri, showed his absolute lack of ethics when Germany invaded the USSR. He proposed a rogue strategy in Congress: “If we see that Germany is winning, we should help Russia. And, if Russia is winning, we should help Germany. And in this way let them annihilate each other as much as possible.”

There is also no mention of US companies who did profitable business with the Nazis. Coca-Cola made the refreshing drink Fanta for them. IBM sold them Hollerith machines, capable of registering and classifying people by race and religion, something very useful for the Holocaust. The German subsidiary of the American corporation General Motors (the main producer of combat trucks for the Wehrmacht) used slaves from the concentration camps. In 1938, Henry Ford received the Nazi distinction of “distinguished foreigner”.
75 years after that May 9, 1945, let us honor the peoples of the USSR who rendered incalculable service to humanity.
Let us also denounce today’s fascism, xenophobia, racism, hate speech, the cult of arms and violence, the arrogant messianism around a supposed “chosen nation” and the use of lies in the manner of Goebbels.
In the face of the neo-fascist virus of the present, let us build a “trench of ideas” in defense of peace, solidarity and humanism.
