Venezuela holds the tenth position worldwide as an exporter of shrimp harvested from the coastal regions of Zulia and Falcón, according to statistics provided by the Venezuelan Aquaculture Society (SVAcuicultura).
As reported by the state television network’s website, 60% of the shrimp produced in the country is exported to the European market, with the Netherlands, England, and France as the primary destinations.
Last December, Fernando Villamizar, president of Asoproco (the Association of Shrimp Producers of the West), noted that 14% of Venezuela’s shrimp exports are destined for China.
The president of SVAcuicultura, Eduardo Castillo, confirmed that the sector’s total annual production reaches 65,000 tons, “of which 5,000 tons are for domestic consumption, while the remainder is sold through exports.”
He added that the shrimp farming industry generates direct employment, benefiting between 14,000 and 17,000 citizens and boosting economic development through the national production system.

It is worth noting that the Venezuelan Aquaculture Society (SVA) aims to bring together key stakeholders in the country’s aquaculture sector while promoting technical, scientific, and commercial exchange in the region.
Of the 19,135 hectares of shrimp farms operating in Venezuela, 14,500 are located in Zulia state and the remainder is distributed among the states: Falcon, Anzoátegui, Nueva Esparta, and Sucre.
