Orinoco Tribune – News and opinion pieces about Venezuela and beyond
From Venezuela and made by Venezuelan Chavistas
The newly formedΒ Embassy Protectors Defense CommitteeΒ created in response to the arrest and bogus charges leveledΒ by the Trump AdministrationΒ against the last fourΒ remainingΒ activistsΒ of the Embassy Protective CollectiveΒ that occupiedΒ the Venezuela EmbassyΒ for 37 days,Β has launchedΒ an international campaign to demand that the Trump administration drop all Federal chargesΒ against the protectors.
TheΒ last remaining four Embassy Proctors βΒ Kevin Zeese, Margaret Flowers, David Paul, and Adrienne PineΒ βΒ were arrested in the Washington D.C. Embassy of Venezuela on May 16, 2019Β having occupiedΒ the Venezuelan Embassy withΒ as many as 100 other activists withΒ the permission ofΒ the Venezuelan governmentΒ over the course of those 37 days. TheΒ Embassy Protection CollectiveΒ wereΒ welcomed into theΒ Venezuelan EmbassyΒ in orderΒ to prevent it from being illegally takenΒ by theΒ unelected regimeΒ of JuanΒ GuaidΓ³Β that wasΒ being imposed on the Venezuelan people by theΒ Trump Administration.
The FourΒ areΒ nowΒ facingΒ federal chargesΒ of βInterfering with certain protective functionsβ of the Federal government that carries a maximum of one-year imprisonment and $100,000 fine for each of them.Β The United States Government is intent on making an example of these citizens and is using its unlimited resources to make sure that they areΒ penalizedΒ and incarcerated.

The Embassy Protectors Defense Committee, made up of a collection of human rights defenders, international law experts, journalists, labor activists, anti-war and social justice advocates,Β is involved in raising resources to help cover the enormous expenses of defending against the bogus charge and the outrageous fines that the government appears intent on imposingΒ ifΒ the charges areΒ not dropped and the case proceeds to trial.
This is a politicized case initiated by an administration that is unrestrained by accepted international lawΒ and recognized state relations as part of the internationalΒ order established over last seven decades.
The Embassy Defense Committee is circulating a petition and launching a massive international campaign to have all charges dropped and toΒ compel the Trump Administration to reenter the community of law-abiding states.Β For more information please visit:Β The Embassy Defense Protection Committee.

Background:Β
The United States Government, once again attempting regime change,Β has been, and still is,Β in clear violation of human rights by taking the whole of the Venezuelan population hostageΒ throughΒ its illegal effortsΒ to bring the Venezuelan government down,Β by imposingΒ sanctionsΒ andΒ threats of violence,Β by denyingΒ the citizenryΒ much needed food and medicineΒ and utilitiesΒ βΒ in parallelΒ to theΒ oppressiveΒ measures takenΒ inΒ Washington D.C.,Β inΒ our own nationβs capital,Β by denying the delivery of food and medicine andΒ ultimatelyΒ shutting off utility services of water and electric power as they did, in attempt,Β to driveΒ outΒ theΒ Embassy Protection Collective.
Clear solutions were offered.Β The public must come to understand that theΒ means of selectionΒ of aΒ Protecting PowerΒ was formalized duringΒ theΒ Vienna Convention on Diplomatic RelationsΒ of 1961.Β In fact, on May 13, 2019, theΒ Embassy Protection CollectiveΒ issued aΒ most salientΒ statementΒ calling for the implementation ofΒ Protecting Power Agreement.
The erosion of civil liberties β the abuse of human rights and the defiance of international laws when instituted by our own Government β must be addressed head-on, at the time the actions or inactions are taken. Knowing full well that abusive power is a threat to absolutely everyone β when they grow comfortable enough in silencing the voices of the defenders, the next target for oppressive power is always the people in general.
