This Sunday, June 23, the Venezuelan Ministry for Foreign Affairs Yván Gil said that it is not up to Canada to express any opinion on the controversy between Guyana and Venezuela over the Essequibo territory dispute.
“The failed Canadian government must dedicate itself to its affairs and stop being a factor of destabilization in the Caribbean region at the service of ExxonMobil,” wrote the top Venezuelan diplomatic on social media
Along these lines, he added that the government of Guyana has to renounce this mechanism of involving outside countries “with frustrated colonialist aspirations, in this controversy, which are sinking together with their lackeys of the stateless [Venezuelan far-]right who would hand over Essequibo and the homeland to North American transnational corporations.”

Minister Gil added that the only “possible and legal” way that will allow the dispute to be resolved is the 1966 Geneva Agreement.
The statements by the head of the Venezuelan Foreign Ministry were in response to statements of the Canadian High Commissioner in Guyana, Mark Berman, who expressed his support for Guyana in the territorial dispute and urged Venezuela to respect international law.
“The Canadian government is concerned about the tensions between Guyana and Venezuela and we reiterate that we support the Guyanese people. We support the government and ask that international law be respected,” he declared during an event to celebrate Canada Day, as published by international new agencies.

Berman added: “In this complex and ever-changing global environment, good relations are paramount, and I cannot emphasize enough the importance we place on our relationship with Guyana.” For his part, the Prime Minister of Guyana, Mark Anthony Phillips, thanked Canada for its support.
“The Canadian official had the impudence of talking about international rule will Canada is in the band of US lackey countries that have been subverting the international rule for the last century, and additionally Phillips talks about the hemispheric Zone of Peace with is a concept promoted precisely by Cuba and Venezuela to counter US warmongering in the region,” said an analyst to Orinoco Tribune when consulted on the matter.
