On Monday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said that âLatin America and the Caribbean are not anyoneâs backyard,â in response to recent reports in which the commander of the US Southern Command accused China of âinfiltrating and plundering resourcesâ from countries in the region.
Guo Jiakun urged the United States to âlet the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean choose their own course of action.â
He added that “the countries of the region have the right to choose their own development paths and partners independently.”

The Chinese official dismissed the US accusations as âstatements that contradict the facts and repeat outdated phrases,â which âonce again expose the deep-rooted Cold War and confrontational mentality of some in the US.â
In contrast, China has long upheld the principles of mutual respect, equality, mutual benefit, openness, inclusiveness and mutually beneficial cooperation in its relations with countries in the region.
According to the official, cooperation between China and Latin America meets the needs of both sides and serves their common interests. It has “effectively promoted local economic and social development and is sincerely welcomed by the countries and peoples of the region.”
Guo Jiakun also noted that âfor years, the United States has spared no effort to interfere and control the Latin American and Caribbean region, with clearly evident hegemonic and abusive behavior.â
In this regard, the Asian giant called on the United States to “stop sowing discord and generating conflict” and, instead, “take more concrete measures for the development of the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean.”
China, Iran Condemn US Empire’s Military Threats Against Venezuela
The statements by the spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs to the Trump administration come in a context marked by the escalation of threats from the US with a military deployment in the Caribbean, endangering the Zone of Peace declared in Latin America and the Caribbean in 2014. The US effort attempts to link Venezuelan government officials to drug trafficking, including President NicolĂĄs Maduro, to justify armed aggression based on hybrid warfare tools.
Meanwhile, the highest authorities of China, Russia, Iran, the member states of ALBA-TCP, and social organizations from around the world have condemned the US aggressions, reaffirming their solidarity with the Bolivarian Revolution and supporting the historic Declaration of Latin America and the Caribbean as a Zone of Peace.
