Although the news network CNN has been part of the campaign promoting the narrative of an alleged upcoming electoral fraud, it has now backed down a bit and acknowledged, for the first time, the possibility of a victory of Nicolás Maduro in the upcoming July 28 presidential elections.
In order to justify its defeat, the US-backed Venezuelan far-right frequently claims that fraud has occurred in elections. They attempted the same strategy in 2018, despite the fact that Venezuela’s electoral system has an excellent reputation. Venezuela’s corporate media outlets and Western media frequently echo the fraud allegations.
Mainstream media such as The Guardian in the United Kingdom, El PaĂs in Spain and CNN, The New York Times, and The Washington Post in the United States have attempted to fabricate a storyline whereby the opposition will win the elections in a landslide. Then, they claim, fraud will inevitably occur, and the victory will be handed to President Maduro. In Venezuela, the pulse on the streets is very different.
CNN has now distanced itself from this storyline and acknowledged that Nicolás Maduro may win the elections without fraud.
International consultant Eglée González-Lobato gave an interview to CNN in which she said that President Maduro may win the election fair and square. The interview was conducted by Carmen Aristegui this Tuesday, July 23.

“As of today, Nicolás Maduro has the possibility of winning this election with his electoral machinery, with the votes he can win, and we are talking about no electoral fraud,” the specialist said.
She also said that the Venezuelan electoral system is “quite robust” and leaves enough traces “for automation experts to detect any error,” in reference to a hypotetical fraud allegation.
She added that in the event of an eventual victory of the opposition candidate Edmundo González, the Venezuelan government would recognize the results.
It seems that this change of focus at CNN is due to the new position of MarĂa Corina Machado, who went from saying that González—who is widely viewed as a surrogate candidate for Machado—had a wide advantage to saying, in recent interviews, that the margin between candidates has narrowed.
