The president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, requested that communities provide what support they can for the electoral campaigns for the communal justices of peace that begin next Wednesday, December 4.
“Let the candidates go to the streets, alleys, stairs, buildings,” said the president. “Let people get to know them, and let an informative synergy be generated that commits them to community justice for peace.” President Maduro made the comments on Monday, December 2, during the 69th broadcast of his program Con Maduro+.
The elections will take place on December 15, which will mark 25 years since the approval of the Constitution of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela. “The best way to celebrate this is with the popular vote, creating the [communal] justice of the peace [system],” President Maduro said.
The Minister of Communes, Ángel Prado, explained that there are currently 5,297 Communal Circuits in the country, and 4,840 are participating in these elections for justices of the peace. He added that 353 indigenous communities will also participate in the process while respecting their ancestral methods.
Prado also reported that 52,000 candidates have registered for the elections that will be held on December 15, in which 15,000 principals and the same number of alternates will be elected.
“They will report to the Citizens’ Assemblies every six months on the cases they have addressed during their three-year term,” he added.
The vice president of organization of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV), Pedro Infante, announced that the National Electoral Council (CNE) is preparing the electoral boards for each voting center in order for all voters to be informed of the candidates in their communities.
“On December 4, the electoral campaign will formally begin in the 4,840 communal circuits for 10 days,” said Infante.
“With this extraordinary and historic election, we are handing over the power of justice to our people,” added Infante. “Communal justices of peace means democratizing justice and providing our people with the capacity to address and resolve conflicts.”
