The elections for the indigenous population seek to appoint 138 councilors in 69 municipalities spread across eight states in Venezuela.
CNE Vice President Carlos Quintero reported Sunday, August 3, that 35% of the indigenous population called to vote has already participated in elections for indigenous councilors, and that voting was proceeding normally with significant turnout.
The electoral process began punctually at 7:00 a.m. (local time), as scheduled, with 100% of polling stations and voting centers operational.
A fundamental feature is that indigenous peoples elect their authorities according to their customs and practices, a mandate established by a 2020 ruling by the Constitutional Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice (TSJ).
The first phase consolidated community assemblies that elected 6,598 spokespersons exercising their right to vote Sunday across 88 centers and 111 polling stations.
The eight ancestral indigenous states involved are AnzoĂĄtegui, BolĂvar, Apure, Monagas, Sucre, Amazonas, Delta Amacuro, and Zulia.
Vice President Quintero urged all spokespersons to vote, noting polling stations remain open until 6:00 p.m. (local time) Sunday.
Counting will begin immediately after polls close.
The day has been described as a “great celebration for our indigenous peoples,” where voters discuss needs before casting ballots.
