Venezuelan Minister for Interior Diosdado Cabello has reported that the safe departure of four opposition figures who requested asylum at the Argentinian embassy in Caracas had been negotiated at the request of María Corina Machado. He also reported that Corina Parisca Pérez, Machado’s mother, had left the country on May 5 under terms of the same negotiations.
This Wednesday, May 8, during episode 525 of his television program Con el Mazo Dando, Cabello stated there were four people in the embassy and not five as had been previously reported, noting that Claudia Macero had left on her own in August 2024. He added that Fernando Martínez Mottola, another individual who had been in the diplomatic headquarters (originally part of a group of six), had left the embassy in December.
Cabello has also rejected claims by some journalists and the secretary of state for the US empire, Marco Rubio, that a foreign commando group secretly removed the four opposition figures from the Argentinian embassy. Cabello explained that the individuals were at the embassy voluntarily and could have left at any time. “They are liars. Who put them there? Us? No! And now they’re putting on a show.”
“I promised not to say details, but since they came out saying it was a Mission: Impossible thing, so one has to say what really happened,” he said, referring to the movie franchise about fictional heists and espionage. “They put on their show, and in the end, they ended up negotiating the way Leopoldo López negotiated, the way everyone has negotiated,” Cabello explained. He noted he withheld certain details as part of the negotiation agreement, but warned that he would release more information if “the campaign of lies” continued.
The secretary general of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela also revealed the negotiations included the departure of Corina Parisca, María Corina Machado’s mother. “It was all part of a negotiation: María Corina Machado’s mother is included. She left on May 5 for Colombia, because they are going to send her to a nursing home.”
