Donald Trump’s Latest Interference in Honduras’ Election Process

Trump accused Rixi Moncada, the candidate of the ruling Liberty and Refoundation Party, of being a representative of the “communist advance,” who is the favorite in most polls to succeed the current president, Xiomara Castro.

US President Donald Trump has once again interfered in Honduras’s electoral process, reaffirming his support for right-wing candidate Nasry Asfura of the National Party (PN), just hours before the general elections on Sunday, November 30.

In his second message in 48 hours, the US president also indicated he would pardon former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández, convicted of drug trafficking.

This latest incursion into Honduras’s internal affairs follows his intervention last Wednesday at Truth Social, where, with his characteristic meddling, the Republican president urged Hondurans to vote for Asfura.

Furthermore, Trump accused Rixi Moncada, the candidate of the ruling Liberty and Refoundation Party, of representing the “advance of communism.” The former Honduran Secretary of Defense is the favorite in most polls to succeed current President Xiomara Castro.

Donald Trump intervened directly in the Honduran election on November 26th by expressing his support for the National Party candidate, Nasry “Tito” Asfura, calling him “the only true friend of freedom in Honduras.”

Honduran presidential candidate Moncada responded to Donald Trump, emphasizing that “they call her a communist to hide the truth: they fear the democratization of the economy, they are terrified of the Tax Justice Law, and they want money to remain a privilege for the wealthiest ten families and not a right for the people.”

“We are going to the elections on November 30th, and I reiterate my accusation that the transmission of preliminary results (TREP) by the National Electoral Council (CNE) on Sunday at 9:00 pm is a trap. I urge the people to protect the tally sheets from each polling station. The two-party system is defeated,” stated the Libre party candidate.

In this context, she pointed out that the same political forces that promoted the coup d’état against the constitutional President Manuel Zelaya in 2009 are insisting on sabotaging Honduran democracy.

According to Honduran political leader Gilberto Ríos, the declaration by US President Donald Trump in favor of the National Party disrupts the strategy of the US Embassy in Tegucigalpa and strengthens the path to victory for the ruling party.

According to Honduran media, a group of international observers also expressed their concern about the interference of the US president in the lead-up to the November 30th elections in Honduras.

6.5 million people are eligible to vote in the general elections, where they will elect the country’s new president, the three vice presidents, the 128 members of Congress, and the authorities of the country’s 298 municipalities.
