President Maduro Received OPEC Secretary General: “We Want Balanced and Fair Oil Prices”

January 9, 2019

The President of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, confirmed on Tuesday night Venezuela’s willingness to defend oil prices in the international markets. After a meeting held at the Miraflores Palace with the Secretary General of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, OPEC, Mohammed Barkindo. The Venezuelan leader emphasized that, “We do not want exorbitant oil prices. We want balanced, fair prices for the good of our country!” In relation to the outcome of the meeting, he informed that, “together with the OPEC secretary general, we talked about the plan for this year 2019, to balance, stabilize and govern the oil market in the best way in the alliance of OPEC oil producing countries and non-OPEC producing countries.”

Maduro highlighted the advances in this area, after the agreements reached last December by the member countries of the oil cartel, after a drop in prices during the last months of 2018.

“We will achieve balance and fair prices. Balanced prices and fair stability in the global economy. Low oil prices do not bring benefits. Balanced and fair prices allow renewed investment, exploration, production and give strength to the world’s financial system with the petro-economy,” he said.

Prior to this meeting with the oil representative, the President held a meeting with the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of the People’s Republic of China, Han Changfu, and in this regard, the head of State described it as “very fruitful, extraordinary. We have received the support of China politically, economically, financially and militarily.”
