Russia Warns the US Against a Military Intervention in Venezuela

January 9, 2019

The Russian government warns the ‘exalted’ in the US against a possible military intervention in Venezuela and qualifies it as an ‘alarming trend’.

“We warned the exalted in Washington against these kinds of temptations,” Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov denounced on Wednesday, referring to US plans to use military force against Venezuela.

In statements offered to journalists in India, Riabkov has expressed concern over Washington’s attempts to consolidate an anti-Chavez front made up of some Latin American countries, referring to the Lima Group comprising Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Chile, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Peru and Saint Lucia.

“I see the attempts of the United States to consolidate an anti-Chavez front … This is an alarming trend,” the Russian diplomat has warned, according to the local state news agency TASS.

However, Riabkov has highlighted that even Latin American governments most critical of Caracas reject any foreign military intervention in Venezuela. “An attempt to use military force would be a catastrophic development,” he insisted.

Washington has repeatedly stated its intention to attack Venezuela with a view to overthrowing Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, a position announced not only by its officials, but also by the White House tenant, Donald Trump.

For his part, Russian President Vladimir Putin has condemned any “attempt” and “terrorist action” to change the situation in Venezuela, and has ratified Moscow’s willingness to support the South American country.

Caracas, in turn, points out that the US has military plans for Venezuela and its vast oil reserves.
