An ALBA-TCP Special Mission traveled to Mexico City to condemn the United States’ flagrant violation of the Tlatelolco Treaty, an agreement that prohibits the shipment and use of nuclear war material in Latin America and the Caribbean. The delegation aims at highlighting the danger to the peace of Latin America and the Caribbean posed by the US naval deployment off the coasts of Venezuela. ALBA-TCP General Secretary Rander Peña led the mission and met with Mexican authorities on Friday, September 12.
Peña expressed the ALBA-TCP’s concerns about the way the United States threatens Latin America and the Caribbean, declared a Zone of Peace in 2014. He repudiated the aggressions, threats, and use of military weapons against Venezuela and other sovereign countries in the continent. He emphasized that the military deployment by the United States and the sending of nuclear submarines to the Caribbean region are a clear violation of the Tlatelolco Treaty.
“The violation of the Tlatelolco Treaty is an obvious concern, given the military deployment by the United States, the sending of nuclear submarines to the Caribbean, violating the protocol that states that nuclear powers cannot send nuclear artillery to countries in the region,” Peña stated.
Concrete actions and regional support
The special mission of ALBA-TCP not only seeks to condemn but also to take concrete actions to protect the region. Rander Peña stated that the mission has been very well received by Mexico. He held various work meetings that are part of the mandate of the governments and countries that are members of the alliance. The group also has a meeting planned with the president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum. She will be given a letter detailing the complaints against the United States and asking for her support.
The violation of the Tlatelolco Protocol by the United States is a serious precedent for the security of the entire region. ALBA-TCP will continue working to ensure that international agreements are respected.
