Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun stated that these sanctions represent an abuse of “extraterritorial jurisdiction.”
The Chinese government rejected the recent measure announced by US President Donald Trump imposing a 25% tariff on countries that purchase oil and gas from Venezuela.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun expressed his firm opposition to these coercive economic measures, referring to them as an abuse of “extraterritorial jurisdiction” and “gross interference” in the internal affairs of other countries, reported EFE.
Guo urged Washington to withdraw all unilateral sanctions against Venezuela and contribute to the peaceful and stable development of the South American country.
Furthermore, Guo noted that trade and tariff wars have no winners, warning that these measures will only increase losses for US companies and consumers.
An “arbitrary and illegal” measure
This measure announced by Trump, which will take effect on April 2, was described by the Venezuelan government as an “arbitrary, illegal, and desperate” decision, stating that far from “weakening its resolve, it confirms the resounding failure of all the sanctions imposed against our country.”
In an official statement, Caracas repudiated this new action as “flagrantly violating international trade norms” that will only serve to strengthen Venezuelan resistance to external pressure.
China, one of Venezuela’s main trading partners, imported 1.4 million metric tons of Venezuelan oil in 2024; thus, Venezuela ranks as the 12th greatest exporter of crude oil to China.
