Cuban Vice President Salvador Valdés Mesa on Sunday called for not ignoring the “irrational onslaught” of the United States government against Venezuela at the opening of the IV Summit between the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) and the European Union (EU).
“We cannot ignore in this meeting the irrational onslaught of the U.S. government against Venezuela and the ongoing deployment of an offensive U.S. military operation in the Caribbean under the false pretext of combating drug trafficking,” said Valdés, who heads the island government’s representation at the meeting.
The vice president stated that it is an “unacceptable threat of aggression, of violation of sovereignty, that undermines the peace and cooperation that Latin American and Caribbean countries want and must preserve.”
In his speech, he stressed Cuba’s “unwavering support” “to the Venezuelan government, its president, and the Bolivarian people.”
He also considered that the international community “must mobilize to stop this direct aggression and military actions in the Caribbean, which endanger regional peace, stability, and security.”

Valdés Mesa also advocated for a “more solidary and collaborative” approach between CELAC and EU countries in order to achieve “tangible commitments and better address the challenges.”
In that sense, he urged to “deepen” the ties, based on “trust and respect for sovereign equality, non-interference in the internal affairs of States, and the right of each country to decide its own political and socioeconomic system.”
The representative of the island rejected the exclusion of Venezuela, Nicaragua, and his country from the Summit of the Americas, which has been postponed.
Valdés highlighted “the attitude” of the majority of nations present at the meeting for recently demanding at the United Nations the end of the economic embargo that the U.S. applies to Cuba, and thanked the denunciations against Washington’s decision to return the island to its list of countries that it considers sponsors of terrorism.
Regarding the perspective of this Summit, he expressed the desire that it contribute to strengthening a CELAC-EU relationship “more solid, oriented towards inclusive development and cooperation, with greater commitment and capacity for dialogue,” based on “reciprocity and without interference,” that allows to reach “objectives and build spaces for common benefit.”
In addition, he deemed the progress made in the bi-regional association since the last summit in Brussels as “insufficient.”
