The president of Cuba, Miguel DĂaz-Canel, arrived in Honduras this afternoon for the 9th Summit of Presidents of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) in Tegucigalpa (the capital of Honduras).
On behalf of President Xiomara Castro, the general coordinator of the Libre party, Manuel Zelaya, welcomed the Cuban leader and the Cuban delegation to the historic meeting. They are joined in the Honduran capital by Cuba’s minister of foreign affairs, Bruno RodrĂguez Parrilla, and ambassador Juan Roberto Loforte.
The trip marks DĂaz-Canel’s first official visit to the Central American nation. There, he will meet with a dozen ministers, heads of state, and leaders from the 33 member states of the main regional coordination mechanism.

Meanwhile, the Central Bank of Honduras is hosting the ministerial meeting prior to the 9th Summit of Heads of State. In private, the diplomatic representatives of each delegation are discussing economic and social solutions of regional interest to the challenges of capitalism and defining the thematic agenda with the strategic guidelines that will be presented this Wednesday at the historic meeting.
The president of Uruguay, YamandĂş Orsi, and the leader of the Haitian Presidential Transition Council, Leslie Voltaire, were already in the Honduran capital. Meanwhile, the arrival of the leaders of Brazil, Bolivia, Guatemala, and Colombia, as well as the head of state of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, is expected.
As part of the 9th CELAC Summit, President Xiomara Castro will hand over the presidency to her Colombian counterpart, Gustavo Petro, who will assume the pro tempore presidency of the organization this Wednesday.
