On Friday, June 27, Ecuador announced it will join the Belt and Road Initiative following Colombia’s recent entry into the China-led global development project.
The cooperation agreement, formalized in Beijing’s Great Hall of the People, was signed in the presence of Presidents Xi Jinping and Daniel Noboa. Both leaders highlighted the alliance’s potential to diversify markets and promote sustainable development in the region.
The deal includes investments in port infrastructure, railways, and renewable energy, aiming to create a logistics corridor linking Ecuador’s Pacific ports with major Asian distribution hubs. It also establishes a bilateral mixed-finance fund to ensure key project execution and an academic and cultural exchange program to strengthen ties between universities and research centers in both countries.

Xi Jinping noted that Ecuador’s participation, following Colombia’s last month, advances a “continental effort to build bridges of shared prosperity.” Noboa emphasized the initiative offers “our country new sources of investment and technology amid global economic challenges.”
Technical teams from both governments will develop a first package of priority projects in the coming months, with construction expected to begin by year-end. The move aims to mark a new chapter in Asia-Pacific integration with Latin America under the threat of global economic war launched by the United States government.
