Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum repudiated US naval deployment in Caribbean waters. On Friday, August 15, during her morning press conference, she explained that the Naval Secretariat of Mexico had presented a document to the Security Cabinet, reporting that various US ships are currently operating in the international waters of Central America and South America.
Sheinbaum emphasized that Mexico’s stance is clear and based on historical principles of foreign policy: “Our position will always be the self-determination of peoples, not only in the case of Mexico but in all countries of Latin America and the Caribbean,” she declared. “We collaborate [with the US], we coordinate, there are international bodies to resolve conflicts, but never interventionism.”
Given the situation. Sheinbaum called for dialog and mutual respect to be prioritized in addressing any differences or threats in the region.
The president also responded to the statements made by her US counterpart, Donald Trump, who claimed that “Mexico and Canada do what we tell them to do” regarding border security.
Sheinbaum dismissed Trump’s statements, attributing them to his particular style, and made it clear that Mexico’s sovereignty is not in question. “It is the people who rule in Mexico. It is that simple and that important,” she stated.

In the context of the US-Mexico bilateral relationship, Sheinbaum defended collaboration in security matters as a “sovereign decision.” She cited as an example the recent extradition of 26 alleged criminals to the United States and the use of a US-made drone for an investigation into organized crime in Mexico, clarifying that this cooperation is carried out under the control of the Mexican government and is nothing new.
The US Department of Defense ordered the deployment of air and naval forces in the southern Caribbean Sea on Thursday, August 14, under the pretext of combating drug cartels.
The naval deployment and Trump’s statements are part of the US pressure policy towards Latin America. With her response, President Sheinbaum tried to clarify Mexico’s position of maintaining cooperation with the US without allowing the nation’s independence to be questioned.
