The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, reiterated her country’s historical position against any form of foreign intervention in Venezuela.
During her morning news conference on Tuesday, August 26, she emphasized that Mexico’s foreign policy is guided by the principle of non-intervention and the defense of self-determination of the peoples.
“We are never going to support the intervention by a foreign government in a sovereign country. And I repeat, it is not only out of personal conviction, but because this must be the position of any Mexican president, since it is in the Constitution,” she said.
She made these remarks in reference to the latest US naval deployment off Venezuelan coasts and rumors circulating on social media and in some international outlets about a possible US military intervention in Venezuela.
With her support for Venezuela’s sovereignty, Sheinbaum joins Cuban President Miguel DĂaz-Canel and Colombian President Gustavo Petro, who have repudiated any and all attempts at military or political intervention against the Venezuelan people and government.
On Monday night, Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro declared that the inviolability of Venezuela’s sovereignty is guaranteed by the indissoluble union of the armed forces, the police, and the people.
“No one can touch this land! This land belongs to the liberators, it is sacred and blessed,” he said.
He also confirmed that Venezuela’s national defense system, which has undergone an intense reorganization, is active round the clock with its full armed capacity to resist any attempt against the peace of the nation.
