Venezuela has submitted to the diplomatic corps accredited in the country (ambassadors and consuls of other nations residing in Venezuela) a proposal to convene a summit of heads of state and government for peace and against war, with the aim of establishing West Asia as a nuclear-weapon-free zone.
In a letter from President Nicolás Maduro addressed to all the presidents of the world, read by Venezuelan Vice President Republic Delcy Rodríguez, reference is made to current conflicts involving Iran, Israel, United States, and Palestine, highlighting that the meeting aims to address the growing danger of a conflict that could propel humanity into the abyss of nuclear war.
The Venezuelan top official said that the summit should be held as soon as possible in a country in the affected region, with a firm commitment to ensuring “the direct participation of the most involved actors and sending a clear signal of the regional will for peace.”
In his letter, President Maduro stated that the summit should be led collectively by “the Arab League, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, the Gulf Cooperation Council, and BRICS, with the commitment of global peacemaking powers such as the People’s Republic of China and the Russian Federation, and with the full and active participation of Global South nations committed to multilateralism and peace.”
It further highlighted that the situation in West Asia has entered a phase of extreme tension and violence, where “the intensification of the State of Israel’s aggression toward Iran, aggravated by US military action in bombing Iranian territory, threatens to trigger a crisis with catastrophic nuclear consequences for the region and the world.”
Venezuelan president’s statement adds that this also “is compounded by Israel’s persistent refusal to dismantle its undeclared nuclear arsenal, as well as its refusal to submit to International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) inspections and to adhere to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). This sustained impunity represents a serious risk to collective security and undermines multilateral principles.”
“Venezuela urgently calls on Global South organizations, including the Non-Aligned Movement, the League of Arab States, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, the Gulf Cooperation Council, the African Union, BRICS, CELAC, and other regional bodies, to jointly promote an immediate and comprehensive ceasefire in West Asia,” reads the letter.
President Maduro reaffirmed his conviction that only through an inclusive approach, based on respect for international law and sovereign equality among nations, can true peace be guaranteed in West Asia.
He hopes for a firm international consensus to end the war, contain the nuclear threat, and build a justice-based peace architecture. “Our people expect us to stop the war and achieve lasting peace under United Nations principles. We have an urgent duty to take responsible collective action for human existence in every corner of the planet.”
The letter emphasizes that the Palestinian people deserve an end to genocide, citing 60,000 deaths of women and children in the last 17 months of Israeli indiscriminate aggression on Gaza. It also considers nuclear disarmament vital for a ceasefire, to prevent further escalation.
It proposes establishing a nuclear-weapon-free zone in West Asia and creating an immediate disarmament mechanism for regional threats.
In the letter, the Venezuelan head of state demanded respect for international law, treaties, and conventions governing nuclear energy’s peaceful use, which prohibit and punish nuclear terrorism.
