To an audience composed of the world’s diplomatic corps accredited in the country, Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yván Gil repudiated the recent attempt made by a sector of the Venezuelan far-right to generate violence in the country.
From the Antonio JosĂ© de Sucre Yellow House in Caracas, Gil spoke Tuesday, August 12, about the recent US imperialist aggression and terrorist plots recently exposed by authorities. “They were planning to place explosives, bombs, in a well-known Venezuelan square… precisely the square we built to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the [Soviet] victory against fascism,” recalled FM Gil. “Look at the symbolism of this. These are groups that define themselves as fascists and intend to attack the symbols of anti-fascism.”
The minister added that they also seek to “generate death and chaos” and that these are no longer acts targeting the country’s authorities but, rather, “they are now going after the Venezuelan people,” attempting to punish them with bombs.
“We have to denounce it,” added FM Gil. “There is a completely unhinged group trying to generate situations of violence. They won’t succee… Venezuela is a country of peace, and its people are peaceful, regardless of their political affiliations…”
The top diplomat also reiterated that this small extremist group is going against the Venezuelan people’s desire for peace, but he emphasized that “we ask the international community, the countries of the world, to condemn these acts, just as Venezuela condemns each and every act of violence and terrorism that occurs throughout the world despite ideological differences.”
“Terrorism in Venezuela isn’t going to happen,” repeated FM Gil. “It is not going to happen, but it is necessary to point it out, expose it to the world, and demand that these elements be completely isolated because they operate in all sorts of ways.”
Minister Gil also denounced the recent action by the US Attorney General’s Office to offer a US $50 million “bounty” for anyone who provides information leading to the capture of President Nicolás Maduro as “a ridiculous event were it not for the seriousness of disregarding international law.” However, the US decision to increase this illegal “bounty” provides hope for the almost defeated far-right Venezuelan opposition, who continue to demand a US $100 million bounty on the president’s head.
FM Gil recalled that in 2014, Latin America declared itself a zone of peace and reaffirmed its willingness to honor that commitment, doing what is necessary to guarantee peace. Gil urged international and multilateral organizations in the region to speak out “to ensure that these threats do not reach their target because the goal is not just to attack Venezuela.” These actions can be ultimately applied to any individual in any country, he pointed out.
“What this group of unhinged individuals, who are present in the United States government, intends to carry out is to generate complete destabilization in Latin America for personal and economic gain… and they are capable of activating a violent, hostile, and negative force against an entire continent,” he warned, adding that their goal is to make Latin America a permanent war zone. US officials have lost connection with humanity, he noted.
Minister Gil also emphasized that a new world is emerging and that this is a source of fear for imperialism, the driving force behind these illegal actions. He added that a major uprising among the peoples of Latin America could emerge, accelerating the changes necessary to consolidate international peace and stability.
Venezuela faces coercive measures
The foreign minister summarized the adversities Venezuela has faced due to the unilateral and illegal sanctions imposed against the nation. He recalled that in 2015, the US government, led by Barack Obama, intensified the multifaceted attack against Venezuela by declaring it an alleged “unusual and extraordinary threat,” which was the backbone of more than 1,040 ensuing illegal and unilateral coercive measures—euphemistically referred to as “sanctions”—”that seek to undermine peace and economic recovery.”
He stated that since then, the aggression against the country has intensified: “an attack that took every form available: blockades on our international trade, sabotage of our industry, both oil and the production of goods and services, sabotage of our currency, the bolivar, and all the versions we can see of economic attacks, even in an inhumane category that occurred during the worst pandemic that humanity has known in the last century, COVID-19, where imperialism tried to block us from accessing medicines, vaccines, [and] equipment.”
Foreign Minister Gil emphasized that due to the structure of relations Venezuela has with most countries in the world, “we were able to overcome the eventuality of COVID-19,” appropriately accessing the necessary resources to confront the pandemic. This US agression constitutes an example of “the greatest perversion we have ever experienced on the international stage,” he noted.
He also highlighted the importance of the country’s civic–military unity, which allows for stability for the Venezuelan people, based on the principles of participatory and protagonist democracy.
The country continues on the path of growth
FM Gil asserted that despite the attacks against the country, Venezuela has established a path to prosperity, with 17 consecutive quarters of economic growth.
“Since 2018, we’ve been able to get the country back on track thanks to President Nicolás Maduro, thanks to the Economic Recovery and Prosperity Program and the alliances we have forged internationally. We have established a path to prosperous growth. We have already achieved 17 consecutive quarters of economic growth, we have managed to recover a large part of our oil industry, and we have also achieved a very important milestone: food sovereignty and security. We have managed to reactivate much of our industry, which was completely paralyzed due to the lack of access to inputs, financing, and technology,” he said.
President Maduro Voices Gratitude for Support Amid Imperial Threats
The foreign minister emphasized that Venezuela is the Latin American country with the greatest prospects for economic growth, as confirmed by various international organizations.
He emphasized that Venezuela will continue on the path of growth and build alliances with free and sovereign countries, investing in social and economic development, promoting an inclusive model for all people, and fostering a true Latin American unity to overcome the US blockade, aggression, and sanctions.
