Venezuelans rescued from the Confinement Center for Terrorism (CECOT) in El Salvador, to where they had been deported by the US authorities, are demanding that the United Nations condemn the cruel and inhumane treatment to which they were subjected for four months in clear violation of their human rights.
At the Palace of Nations, located in Geneva, Switzerland, Venezuelan citizen Arturo Suárez Trejo highlighted that these repressive actions by those responsible for CECOT “constitute serious violations of human rights. Therefore, we request official statements from UN offices condemning the illegal actions of the Salvadoran government and demanding the cessation of any measures that put the freedom and human rights of migrants at risk.”
He explicitly denounced the crimes of arbitrary detention, torture, and forced disappearance committed against Venezuelan citizens. He also noted that the US and Salvadoran authorities never informed the public nor the Venezuelan authorities about the crime committed, in addition to preventing the detainees from having any contact with the outside world, including with lawyers or family members, throughout their period of illegal imprisonment.

Moreover, he criticized the silence of the UN for not intervening and demanding the immediate release of all Venezuelans imprisoned in CECOT.
Finally, Suárez requested that the UN pressure the United States to cease the application of the Foreign Enemies Act against Venezuelan nationals residing in US territory.
On September 3, the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans, United States, ruled that the Trump administration cannot expedite the deportations of Venezuelan migrants under the false allegations of all of them belonging to the now-defunct Tren de Aragua gang by using the Foreign Enemies Act of 1798.
