Venezuelan Minister for Science and Technology Gabriela Jiménez reported that 98% of cancer-related diagnoses in Venezuela are made in the public healthcare system that serves Venezuelans free of charge.
This Friday, September 13, during a training session for health personnel participating in the National Cancer Registry, Minister Jiménez explained that this database will allow for more planned and effective policies for cancer diagnosis and treatment.
“We want the epidemiological data to be stored in Venezuela because it is Venezuelans’ data. There is confidentiality, traceability, and transparency. It must be auditable and respect the patient’s privacy,” she said.
According to a press release from the Ministry of Science and Technology, Jiménez also reported on the acquisition of medical supplies and equipment to treat cancer, including more than 20 linear accelerators and CT scanners.
In Venezuela, cancer patients and all patients suffering from chronic diseases are eligible to receive free-of-charge treatment paid for by Venezuela’s socialist government. These services have been heavily affected by illegal US sanctions. However, the economic recovery witnessed in recent years has allowed the government to resume and improve these services.
This Friday, the Venezuelan government launched the digital platform National Cancer Registry to guarantee the best care for cancer patients in the country and improve efficiency and transparency in the use of state financial resources.
