The BRICS, the influential bloc of emerging geopolitical powers, demanded an immediate end to the cycle of violence in West Asia following the recent attacks against Iran. The group also pushed for the establishment of a zone free of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction in the region as a whole, a crucial measure to ensure long-term stability,
The Brazilian government, the current president of the bloc, issued the forceful statement on Tuesday, June 24. The statement responds directly to the recent United States and Israeli military attacks against Iran, events that have dangerously escalated regional tensions. The statement emphasize the urgency of protecting peace and stability in the region, highlighting diplomacy as the key tool.
The group reaffirmed the need to resolve conflicts in accordance with relevant international resolution mechanisms. Consequently, the bloc urged the international community to support and facilitate dialogue processes, respecting international law, and contributing constructively to the peaceful resolution of disputes for the benefit of all humanity.
They also expressed deep concern about any attack against “peaceful nuclear facilities carried out in violation of international law and relevant International Atomic Energy Agency resolutions.” Furthermore, the bloc condemned any military action against this type of infrastructure, warning of the serious risks these attacks pose to global security.
Below is the BRICS joint statement on the escalating security situation in West Asia (inaccurately referred to as the Middle East), following the military attacks on the territory of the Islamic Republic of Iran:
BRICS Joint Statement on the Escalation of the Security Situation in the Middle East Following the Military Strikes on the Territory of the Islamic Republic of Iran
We express grave concern over the military strikes against the Islamic Republic of Iran since 13 June 2025, which constitute a violation of international law and the Charter of the United Nations, and the subsequent escalation of the security situation in the Middle East.
In the face of rising tensions with unpredictable consequences for international peace and security, as well as for the world economy, we underscore the urgent need to break the cycle of violence and restore peace. We call on all parties to engage through existing channels of dialogue and diplomacy, with a view to de-escalating the situation and resolving their differences through peaceful means.
We express serious concern over any attacks against peaceful nuclear installations that are carried out in violation of international law and relevant resolutions of the International Atomic Energy Agency. Nuclear safeguards, safety, and security must always be upheld, including in armed conflicts, to protect people and the environment from harm. In this context, we reiterate our support for diplomatic initiatives aimed at addressing regional challenges.
Civilian lives must be protected, and civilian infrastructure must be safeguarded, in full compliance with international humanitarian law. We extend our sincere condolences to the families of the victims and express our solidarity with civilians affected.
Guided by the principles enshrined in the United Nations Charter, BRICS remains committed to promoting international peace and security and to fostering diplomacy and peaceful dialogue as the only sustainable path toward long-term stability in the region. In this regard, we also reaffirm the necessity of establishing a zone free of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction in the Middle East, in line with relevant international resolutions.
We call upon the international community to support and facilitate dialogue processes, uphold international law, and contribute constructively to peaceful settlements of disputes for the benefit of all humanity.
BRICS countries will remain seized of the matter.
Iran Now First Line of Defense of BRICS and the Global South
The BRICS organization urged all parties involved to prioritize dialogue to avoid an escalation that could lead to a larger crisis. This stance aligns with previous calls from the group, such as that issued at the October 2024 summit, where BRICS leaders such as Vladimir Putin and Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva strongly advocated for peaceful solutions.
The statement also emphasized the importance of respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the region’s countries, a recurring principle in all BRICS declarations. In this regard, the bloc seeks to consolidate its role as a multipolar voice in global geopolitics, with a multilateral approach to addressing tensions.
Finally, they insisted that the military attacks against the Islamic Republic of Iran since June 13, 2025, represent a violation of international law and the United Nations Charter. This aggression has consequently led to a further escalation of the security situation in the Middle East.
