* Nicolas Maduro’s Anticorruption Plan in Venezuela

December 30, 2018

The plan forms part of the three vital lines proposed by the Government of Venezuela for 2019:

  • consolidating peace,
  • achieving economic recovery, and
  • fighting corruption.

This Wednesday, the president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, announced the National Anticorruption Plan for his second term as head of state, which he will assume on Thursday, January 10, 2019, after being elected with the 67.84 percent of the votes in May of this year.

“I believe that the greatest enemy we have, hurting the people every day, is indolence, bureaucracy, and corruption of some officials (…) that is rotting everything. They are bandits, thieves, who disguise themselves as red, red, and have robbed the homeland. The fight is against indolence, bureaucracy and corruption, no matter who falls, “the president said on national television at the time to announce the plan, entrusted to the vice president of the nation, Delcy Rodríguez.

There will be 23 comptrollerships throughout Venezuela that, through 4,600 auditors and 2,600 lawyers, will work to combat administrative irregularities within state agencies.

A work with the communal power

In addition, the National Anticorruption Plan incorporates the participation of the Venezuelan population through the communes (organized territorial communities), through a meeting that will collect popular proposals and with the intention of carrying them out by the Government.

The spokeswoman for the Presidential Council of Communes, Anny Higgins, affirmed that the anti-corruption plan signifies a new stage in the Bolivarian Government, both of Hugo Chávez and Nicolás Maduro, since it will strengthen the “ethical character” of the officials and of those who participate in spaces of social organization. Also, he assured that the communes will bend to the fight against corruption.

For his part, President Nicolás Maduro called on military leaders, national, regional and municipal authorities to fight against bureaucracy and corruption.

The plan is framed within the three lines proposed this year: Consolidate peace in Venezuela; move forward with the Recovery, Growth and Economic Prosperity Program; and beat the bureaucracy.

Figures

  • 18 corruption plots in PDVSA (Petróleos de Venezuela), which holds 90 percent of the country’s income, were filed from August 2017 to August 2018.
  • 10,727 people were charged by the Prosecutor’s Office, another 4,116 have been accused and investigated or are in the process of investigation.
  • 1,129 people have been arrested for corruption.
  • 824 people were convicted of these crimes.
  • 20 oil managers were accused of corruption and patrimonial damage to Venezuela.
