Carolina Sandoval, a Chilean producer for the multistate media network Telesur, was released on Saturday morning after having been subjected to arbitrary detention while covering a student march which was repressed by the Chilean government.
The president of Telesur, Patricia Villegas, condemned the producer’s arrest after Carabineros (Chilean armed police) violently dispersed the student mobilization commemorating the eve of the “Young Combatant’s March,” on Friday, March 28 in the Chilean capital, Santiago.
Villegas also demanded that the Telesur team “be provided all guarantees to continue working as we uphold our commitment to reporting on what is happening. This act cannot intimidate us, and we condemn it.”

Although Carolina Sandoval has been released, she still has to appear before the courts.
On Friday, Carabineros repressed a student protest in Santiago de Chile with water cannons and excessive use of force. Arbitrarily, they detained four minors and press personnel reporting on the event, including Sandoval.
Consequently, she was taken to the Third Police Station of Santiago, where she was held without legal justification.
The incident, which occurred during a march commemorating the historic youth resistance against Augusto Pinochet’s dictatorship, has been considered as a direct attack against social movements in Chile. The Young Combatant’s March is a symbol of the Chilean society’s fight against state repression and criminalization of protests.
