Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro denounced members of the opposition for having hitmen at their disposal in Venezuela with the aim of assassinating the president during campaign rallies amid the upcoming July 28 presidential elections.
“They have a group of hitmen, the extreme right… They have a group of hitmen already in Venezuela, looking for me, looking for us [his presidential campaign staff], to harm us,” President Maduro said this Sunday, June 9, during an event in Caracas with leaders of the governing United Socialist Party (PSUV).
The president pointed toward Leopoldo López, Antonio Ledezma, and Julio Borges, who remain fugitives from Venezuelan justice for conspiring against the homeland and the peace of Venezuela.
President Maduro made these statements in response to questions about the lack of information about his campaign schedule. Due to this threat, his rallies and demonstrations of support are a surprise and, thus, genuine.

“My arrivals everywhere have to be a surprise. The people taking care of me and the security teams are doing a good job… In the hands of god, I am heading towards the destinations to fulfill my mission here on Earth,” he said.
President Maduro also blamed far-right politician María Corina Machado for this case. She already participated in the April 2002 coup d’état, in which the opposition attempted to overthrow President Hugo Chávez with the stroke of a pen. In her desire to be president, Machado still capriciously insists on requesting sanctions that harm the country.
