The president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, condemned the injustice committed against the 238 Venezuelans deported from the US and transferred to a maximum-security prison in El Salvador. He demanded that US and Salvadoran authorities cease the persecution of Venezuelan migrants.
On Sunday, March 23, President Maduro posted a video on social media that reflects the national condemnation of the illegal deportation of Venezuelan migrants to El Salvador and their subsequent imprisonment. He criticized the cruelty and injustice of this controversial action.
The harrowing images showing the cruel treatment received by the Venezuelan migrants upon arriving at the Confinement Center for Terrorism (CECOT) in El Salvador was accompanied by a message from President Maduro: “The actions of the US and Salvadoran governments against our young workers constitute an act of cruelty and injustice—a cruel and outrageous abduction. Venezuela demands that the US government cease the persecution and violation of the rights of Venezuelan migrants.”
Last weekend, the US government deported 238 Venezuelan migrants, accused without evidence of belonging to the now defunct Tren de Aragua criminal gang. Upon arriving at the CECOT in El Salvador, they were subjected to cruel treatment and harassment by prison officials of Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele’s administration.
Repatriation of migrants
On Sunday, the Venezuelan government is scheduled to receive a new flight of migrants from the US as part of the Return to the Homeland Program, after the two sides resumed the process following Washington’s blocking of the program.
