Iran today reaffirmed its support for the nation and the Venezuelan Government in the face of any “foreign intervention or coup d’état” in the Caribbean country.
“The Islamic Republic of Iran supports the Government and the nation of Venezuela in the face of any foreign interference in the internal affairs of the country or any other null and illegal act, including an attempted coup d’état,” stressed the spokesman for the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Bahram Qasemi.
The spokesman has expressed his hope that the political discord in this Latin American country will be solved as before “by peaceful means and dialogue and by the Venezuelan people and Government.”
Qasemi’s statements came after the president of the National Assembly (AN) of Venezuela, Juan Guaidó, self-proclaimed the eve “president in charge” of the country to force the exit of the Venezuelan Presidency of Nicolás Maduro.
The tension between Maduro and the opposition skyrocketed when the US Administration, headed by Donald Trump, issued a statement a few minutes later after Guaidó’s announcement, in which he recognized the young dissident as interim president of Venezuela, a step that Argentina, Colombia and Peru, also took, among other countries.
Maduro, in response, announced the breakdown of his country’s political and diplomatic relations with the United States. accusing it of trying to install a “puppet” government of US interests in the Bolivarian country. “Enough of interventionism,” said the president who is serving two weeks of his second term as president of Venezuela.
Several countries, such as Mexico, Russia, Cuba, Bolivia, China, Iran and Turkey have supported Maduro in the face of foreign interference. Moscow denounced the maneuvers of the West to, in violation of international law and the sovereignty of Venezuela, try to overthrow the Venezuelan president’s government.
Faced with this new coup plot, Maduro has called for the “union” of the people and the Venezuelan Armed Forces to put themselves on “maximum alert” and deploy efforts to deal with enemy plots.
