Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro was sworn in this Friday, January 10, before the National Assembly (AN) for the constitutional period 2025-2031 after being reelected in the July 28 presidential elections. When taking the oath, Maduro placed his right hand on the original Constitution of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, signed by Commander Hugo Chávez at its approval, on December 15, 1999.
The president swore with these words:
“Before this great National Assembly, the Legislative Power of the Republic. Before visitors and delegates from 125 countries. Before the people of Venezuela, I swear by the Indigenous Peoples’ leader Guaicaipuro, by the Negro Primero Pedro Camejo, and José Leonardo Chirino. I swear by Bolívar, by Sucre, by Urdaneta, and by Manuela Sáenz. I swear by the eternal memory of our beloved Commander Chávez. Before this Constitution, I swear by Venezuela’s historic, noble, and brave people that I will fulfill all its mandates. I will fulfill all the obligations of the constitution and the laws of the republic, and this new presidential term will be a period of peace, prosperity, equality, and new democracy. I swear it by history! I swear it by my life! And so, I will fulfill. We will fulfill! I swear it!”
President of the National Assembly Jorge Rodríguez stated, “If you do so, citizen Nicolás Maduro Moros, may God, may the homeland, may our noble people reward you with their blessings. If not, may they demand it from you. You are hereby invested as constitutional president of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela!”
President Maduro was awarded the presidential sash, embroidered by hundreds of women, men, and children, and the Collar of the Order of Liberators of Venezuela, which holds the key to the chest containing the book of acts of Venezuela’s Independence.
When President Maduro was heading to the National Assembly, he greeted a massive group of supporters who were waiting for him on his way.
“The Constitution guarantees a democratic state of law and justice”
After the swearing-in ceremony, President Nicolás Maduro gave a speech in which he said that the Constitution guarantees a democratic state of law and justice to continue the peace in the nation. He added that the Constitution is victorious today, and Venezuela is at peace. Therefore, “this ceremony is possible because Venezuela is at peace, fully exercising its sovereignty and national independence.”
“I was not appointed President by the United States government or by the pro-imperialist governments of the Latin American far-right,” Maduro emphasized. “I was not appointed by the oligarchs. I come from the people. I am from the people, and my power emanates from history and the people. I owe myself to the people in my entire life, body, and soul! The power I represent and carry belongs to a people, and I owe myself to the people,” he said.
“I swore before Commander [Chávez] absolute loyalty to his legacy, to his struggle, to his dreams, which were not other but the original dreams of the Giant. Hugo Chávez made the historic feat of bringing to the 21st century the ideas and the original project of the men and women who, on horseback, expelled the Spanish empire from all South American lands,” said Venezuelan President Maduro.
He also said that the far-right opposition had its plans but that the swearing-in was a great victory for Venezuelan democracy. “They tried to turn the swearing-in into a world war. That if they come in, that if they go out, that it blew up, that it happened, that the wallet, that they are coming, that they left. Say what you want to say, but they could not prevent this Venezuelan and constitutional inauguration. It is a great victory for Venezuelan democracy—for the people who want peace and stability! It is a great Venezuelan victory! They could not, and they will not be able to!”
Venezuela’s heroic resistance
President Nicolás Maduro recalled that if anything characterizes the Venezuelan people’s 500-year history, it is the history of heroic resistance for so many years against all forms of domination, colonialism, and imperialism that have tried in every way to threaten the country’s peace and sovereignty.
On the other hand, President Maduro pointed out that he will always move forward with the hurricane and volcanic force of a people who want to preserve their homeland and have a future full of peace. With the supporters of Commander Hugo Chávez, he swore to carry forward all the dreams and the strength of Commander Chávez.
“We are the builders of the Constitution born despite the oligarchy. Let no one be confused with the Venezuelan people. I said there would be peace, and there will be peace. We are the warriors of history. We will guarantee peace and national sovereignty forever.”
The Venezuela President added that the presidential sash with the eight stars that he received represents the founding of the Republic of Colombia, Guayana, the Orinoco, the victory of Manuel Piar, of Simón Bolívar, and the founding of the state that reached the mountains of Junín and Ayacucho 200 years ago.
“We are the warriors of history, and we will guarantee peace and national sovereignty,” said President Maduro.
