President Maduro criticized the government of Argentina for its involvement in terrorist plots in Venezuela during the Christmas period. He highlighted that during this festive period, Venezuelan authorities arrested 125 mercenaries of various nationalities, who arrived with the intention of executing terrorist actions in Venezuela, including a plan to attack Vice President Delcy Rodríguez. However, due to the work of the security and intelligence agencies, the government was prepared for this threat.
President Maduro made these comments on Monday, January 6, at a work meeting held in the Boyacá Hall of Miraflores Palace. The meeting of the government officials, the military high command, and the directorate of the police forces had the objective of defining strategies and actions to link the efforts of the national government to the real needs of the people. At the meeting, President Maduro highlighted the fundamental role of the security forces in safeguarding the peace and tranquility of the Venezuelan people during the Christmas season.
Complaint against the Argentinian government
President Maduro condemned the involvement of the Argentinian government in terror plots, emphasizing that such actions constitute a direct aggression against the country. “I am proud of the military and police personnel, who have guaranteed peace and tranquility amid national and international fascist threats. Keep your guard up and be ready for permanent combat!” said the Venezuelan president.
Diosdado Cabello, minister of the Interior, Citizen Security and Peace, stated that the arrested mercenaries had the task of attacking public services and leaders of the Bolivarian Revolution. “As per the law, all of them have been arrested and are being brought to justice,” he announced.
Cabello also mentioned the Argentinian government’s plan of “sending the gendarmes” to Venezuela, a plan publicly confirmed by the security minister of that country.
President Maduro highlighted that these actions make clear the role of the US empire in directing aggression against Venezuela. “We were born defying empires, defeating empires, and we will continue on our path. Every Venezuelan must be an active entity to safeguard peace throughout the national territory,” he said.
2,000 international delegates to be present at inauguration
President Maduro also reported that around “2,000 international delegates have arrived, including politicians, representatives of social, cultural and intellectual movements” to be present at the presidential inauguration ceremony of January 10. “We are writing beautiful and great history of this 21st century… it is nice to review what we did in 2024,” he added, stressing the importance of reflecting on the advances in economic growth and social recovery of the country.
He emphasized that Venezuela has been able to “continue its path of economic growth, social recovery, and deepening of democracy while combating the imperialist plans of fascism, hatred, intolerance and violence.”
President Maduro also referred to the need for “spiritual, psychological and political immunity” against hatred and campaigns of division that try to sow confrontation among Venezuelans. He stressed the importance of unity and the defense of patriotic values, calling it a fundamental part of his government’s political project.
He emphasized that Venezuela’s inspiration comes from its history and its leaders, not from foreign powers. “Our inspiration is Bolívar, not Washington,” he said. “Our inspiration is here, in our land, in the Orinoco, here in the depths of South America, our project is South American, our American, not Washingtonian, it is not in Monroe, it is in Bolívar, who is of our everyday, our yesterday, our today, forever ours.”

Venezuela suspends diplomatic relations with Paraguay
On Monday, Venezuela suspended diplomatic relations with Paraguay after President Santiago Peña issued statements supporting the former far-right opposition candidate Edmundo González, who is currently conducting a tour throughout the region, with the intention of entering Venezuela to generate violence and subvert institutional order.
“Venezuela categorically condemns the statements of the President of Paraguay, Santiago Peña, who, ignoring international law and the principle of non-intervention, relapses into a failed practice that recalls the political fantasies of the extinct Lima Group with its ridiculous adventure called Guaidó,” reads the statement issued by the Venezuelan Foreign Ministry announcing the break in diplomatic relations.
On Sunday, Peña held a video conference with González, whom he called “the winner of the presidential elections in Venezuela.” Peña, who reestablished relations with Caracas three months after taking office in August 2023, expressed the “need for the region to unite to work for absolute respect for the popular will and to prevent authoritarian regimes from remaining in force,” highlighting that he backed “the victory of González.”
