The president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, reiterated the proposal for carrying out a constitutional reform in 2025 that would democratize the state and would put more power in the hands of the people.
“In Venezuela, the people have the last word to approve a reform that would allow for the modification of the constitution,” President Maduro said in a message published on social media on Saturday, January 4.
In the video message, he asserted that, despite the ongoing attacks on Venezuela, the country has been able to “bring to fruition of the main proposal of the 1999 Constituent Assembly, the construction of a participative and protagonist democracy.”
The proposal for a major constitutional reform on democracy was made by the President for the first time on December 19, when he announced that a team of national and international advisors had been formed to discuss with the people on the reform project.

At that time, he stated that the proposed reform “will further democratize the Venezuelan society, empower citizens, and consolidate Venezuela’s freedom, national sovereignty, and popular sovereignty.”
“Venezuela is seeing more and better democracy, more and better participation, and for there to be democracy, the people are key,” he said last month. “The old Western bourgeois liberal philosophy that democracy must depend only on political parties is a lie.”
