The first vice president of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV), Diosdado Cabello, stated that there will be no “second round” in the Venezuelan presidential elections and there will be no re-run either, responding to those who are suggesting that the presidential elections be repeated.
“Here Nicolás Maduro won, we are not going to please the oligarchs,” Cabello said during the transmission of his television program Con El Mazo Dando on Thursday, August 15. Similarly, he added that there will be no second round because it is not in the Constitution of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.
He called the proposal to repeat the elections ridiculous and urged the governments of other countries making this suggestion “not to interfere in the internal affairs of Venezuela.”
“We are not going to please the children of daddy and mommy, that is to say the surnames [oligarchs], no, we are not going to please them, no way”,” he stressed, discarding the demands of some sectors of the Venezuelan far right to repeat the presidential elections.
On Tuesday, August 13, the special advisor to the president of Brazil, Celso Amorim, suggested holding a second round in Venezuela, adding that it is an option he has discussed with the governments of Mexico and Colombia.

However, the president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, clarified that he will wait for the Supreme Court of Justice to rule on the Venezuelan presidential elections.
He stated that he has no immediate plans to discuss the situation in Venezuela with his counterparts from Brazil and Colombia, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Gustavo Petro, respectively.
Earlier this month, the presidents of Mexico, Colombia and Brazil issued a joint statement highlighting that the only entity in charge of declaring the results of the elections is the National Electoral Council (CNE) of Venezuela.
They also called on “the country’s political and social sectors to exercise the utmost caution in demonstrations and public events.”
A few days ago, Cabello also questioned those within the opposition calling for a re-run election. He asked why someone who won an election with such a big margin, as the Venezuelan far-right opposition is claiming, would want to repeat the presidential election. He highlighted that this demand, which is now supported by statements from Brazil and Colombia, is not compatible with the victory narrative promoted by the Venezuelan extreme right and its masters in Washington.
