The commander-in-chief of the Bolivarian National Armed Force (FANB), Vladimir Padrino, denounced Sunday a flagrant violation of Venezuela’s sovereign airspace. A US intelligence aircraft entered without authorization, prompting a strong response from Venezuelan authorities.
This incident underscores the Caribbean nation’s firmness in defending territorial sovereignty and its resolute rejection of foreign intrusion. The FANB issued the statement during a press conference held amid the country’s municipal elections.
Defense Minister Padrino identified the aircraft as an RC-135, known for its intelligence capabilities. This unidentified aircraft flew over and orbited the strategic northern zone of La Orchila, a region vital to Venezuela’s national security. The presence of this foreign military aircraft in such a sensitive area without permission represents a clear violation of international laws governing civil and military aviation.
Although the plane submitted a flight plan to Venezuelan authorities, the control tower at Simón Bolívar International Airport in Maiquetía explicitly denied authorization to enter Venezuelan airspace. Despite this refusal, the aircraft violated Venezuela’s aviation safety system and Flight Information Region (FIR). This act ignored international aviation regulations and challenged Venezuela’s authority over its air territory. Padrino emphasized Venezuelan authorities maintain full jurisdiction there.
“This act violated the aviation security system and the FIR, which represents a violation of aviation regulations. In that region, we are the authorities,” the top commander stated.

“We strongly reject this supremacist imperialist stance, demonstrating total disregard for established rules and global law,” stated General Padrino Lopez. His words reflect the state’s indignation at what it perceives as arrogance and disrespect for Venezuela’s sovereignty.
The FANB condemns such incursions as hostile acts undermining regional peace. Venezuela, as a sovereign nation, exercises its right to protect territorial integrity. The military institution reiterates its unwavering commitment to homeland defense.
