The minister of foreign affairs of Venezuela, Yván Gil, criticized a recent communiqué issued by the government of Ecuador warning Ecuadorian citizens about alleged risks when traveling to Venezuela.
The Ecuadorian government urged its citizens to refrain from traveling to Venezuela, an action that was repudiated by the Venezuelan Foreign Affairs minister in a social media post on Wednesday, May 28, who called it an act “submissive to foreign interests” and “deeply ridiculous.”
The controversy emerged when the Ecuadorian Foreign Ministry issued a travel alert on Tuesday, claiming alleged “risks of arbitrary detentions and lack of guarantees and right to defense” in Venezuela.
In view of this unusual and unfounded warning, Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yván Gil, posted a message of indignation: “What an utter ridiculousness coming from a government kneeling and subservient to the US.” Thus, the Venezuelan diplomat not only ridiculed the Ecuadorian position but also pointed it out as a clear sign of servility towards the United States.
In line with the Venezuelan government’s policy of reciprocity and firmness in the defense of its sovereignty and citizens, FM Gil also informed the public of a Venezuelan travel alert directed towards the United States.
Earlier on Thursday, it was announced that Venezuelan authorities decided to issue a “Travel Alert for all Venezuelan citizens,” advising Venezuelans about risks involved with traveling to the United States.
Moreover, the alert urged “Venezuelan citizens currently residing in US territory to consider leaving said country.” This drastic recommendation is based on serious concerns about the safety and well-being of Venezuelans on US soil.
The official Venezuelan statement explicitly highlighted that “Venezuelans in the US are victims of a systematic pattern of human rights violations.”
The statement denounced the US authorities for arbitrarily detaining Venezuelans, separating families, and transferring Venezuelans to concentration camps in third countries. The Venezuelan government called these actions “an unacceptable practice that recalls the worst chapters of contemporary history.”
In short, the response of Foreign Minister Yván Gil to the government of Ecuador and the earlier travel alert to the US reflect an active, sovereign and uncompromising diplomatic posture on the part of Venezuela. The Venezuelan government thus demonstrates that it does not tolerate what it considers to be acts of submission or unfounded provocations.
