Venezuela expressed solidarity with Palestine on the 77th anniversary of the Nakba, the forced exile of Palestinians from their ancestral land by Zionist colonialism and the continued suffering of millions of Palestinians.
“Seventy-seven years ago, the colonial ambition of Israeli Zionism gave way to a massive, planned and violent expulsion of the Palestinian population,” the Venezuelan government stated in a communiquĂ© issued on Thursday, May 15. “That historic crime has not ceased: its tragic consequences persist to this day, now aggravated by an ongoing genocide, brutally executed by the Nazi regime of Israel and its head, the war criminal Benjamin Netanyahu.”
According to the Venezuelan government, the Nakba, far from being a mere memory of the past, “constitutes an open wound that bleeds with every act of aggression, with every murdered child, with every destroyed home, with every Palestinian life cut down by the machinery of war, apartheid and occupation of the State of Israel.”
“On this date of profound historical significance and collective memory, the people and the government of Venezuela, led by President Nicolás Maduro Moros, extend an embrace of brotherhood and an unwavering commitment to the brave and dignified people of Palestine,” the statement added. “Their cause is our cause. Their heroic resistance is a source of inspiration for the free peoples of the world. Their legitimate yearning for justice, peace and sovereignty is a cry that we make our own, with the conviction that sooner rather than later, freedom and dignity will flourish forever in the sacred land of Palestine.”
The statement concludes with an emphatic “Long live free and sovereign Palestine,” reaffirming Venezuela’s support for the just cause of the Palestinian people.
May 15, 1948 marked the beginning of a colonial genocide, with the forced establishment of “Israel” on the ancient land of Palestine, signifying an end of freedom and fulfillment of rights and equality for the Palestinian people.
More than 700,000 people became refugees in their own land. Today there are more than 5.7 million Palestinians yearn to return to their homeland one day.
