The government of Venezuela reported on Tuesday that it had re-established cooperation with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights under terms agreeable to the nation’s diplomatic corps.
“The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela reiterates that its commitment to human rights is inalienable, as mandated by our Constitution and, in this sense, reports that cooperation has been reestablished with the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights under the terms of independence, sovereignty and non-intervention in internal affairs, principles established in the Charter of the United Nations,” reads a statement released by Venezuelan Minister for Foreign Affairs Yván Gil through his social media accounts.
The ministry also celebrated Human Rights Day and the anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted on December 10, 1948 by the United Nations General Assembly as UN Resolution 217.
“The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, zealous guardian of the principles of the Liberator Simón Bolívar, which inspired the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, celebrates Human Rights Day and the anniversary of this historic document that represents a global commitment to their protection and promotion,” the document added.

In addition, a call was issued to the international community to respect the principles contained in the universal declaration and to avoid weaponizing the cause of human rights for political purposes, “an action that has caused immense harm to humanity.”
“The government and the Venezuelan people reiterate their firm commitment to the promotion, protection, and enjoyment of all human rights,” read the statement, highlighting the importance of this day as an opportunity to redouble efforts in this area in light of the urgent need to enforce the Universal Declaration, particularly in light of the atrocities that are being carried out in Palestine.
Last February, Venezuela announced its decision to suspend the activities of the Technical Advisory Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights in the country and to carry out a comprehensive review of the terms of cooperation described in the Letter of Understanding in light of the “improper role” played by that institution.
