On June 3, 2025, Venezuela’s National Assembly held a historic session in which it overwhelmingly approved a law that allows the country to formally join the International Organization for Mediation (IOMed) by ratifying the existing convention that created this organization.
Born in Hong Kong on May 30, 2025, IOMed emerges as a progressive alternative to traditional international conflict resolution bodies, which many leaders criticize as instruments of U.S. imperialism. This move signals Venezuela’s firm commitment to fostering a multipolar global order that respects sovereignty and peaceful dispute resolution.

Rejecting imperialist multilateralism, embracing sovereignty and peace
Jorge RodrĂguez, President of the Venezuelan National Assembly, framed the decision as a bold rejection of the so-called “multilateral organizations” that he described as “the American empire’s gendarmes,” which historically have served to impose hegemonic interests and undermine the peoples of the Global South.
RodrĂguez emphasized the urgent need for new international structures that genuinely serve the interests of peace and dialogue among nations, rather than perpetuating conflict and domination.
“Sooner rather than later, we must abandon these outdated institutions and create new organizations that communicate with the people and seek peaceful solutions to existing disputes,” RodrĂguez declared, underscoring Venezuela’s leadership in this diplomatic initiative.
The Convention establishing IOMed was signed by representatives from 85 countries and nearly 20 international organizations, with 33 founding member states committing to this innovative framework. IOMed aims to complement and improve upon existing mechanisms by offering greater flexibility, lower costs, and more effective implementation of mediation processes.

The world is undergoing rapid changes , with intersecting contradictions demanding new approaches. IOMed’s creation represents a timely and hopeful alternative to confrontational diplomacy, promoting peaceful mediation aligned with the principles of sovereignty and multipolar cooperation.
Venezuela’s ratification of the IOMed Convention exemplifies its steadfast dedication to reshaping international relations away from imperialist domination toward a just and multipolar world order, in solidarity with other progressive nations committed to peace and sovereignty.
