Venezuela urged the United Nations to monitor the imposition of unilateral economic measures as a means of political and economic coercion.
Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yván Gil made this comment during his speech at the plenary session of the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, on Thursday, June 13.
Minister Gil proposed that in addition to monitoring the imposition of these measures, the UN should also study their negative impact on the economy and development of the affected countries.
The Venezuelan foreign minister urged the responsible members of the international community to “prevent this reality from being downplayed or ignored, including in the context of the intergovernmental processes underway at the United Nations.”
He stressed that the “illegal measures are now much more cruel and destructive. They cause pain and suffering of entire peoples to advance interventionist and destabilization agendas… We must say it clearly, they endanger the lives and well-being of the peoples subjected to them.”
“If we are truly committed to honoring our pledge of leaving no one behind, the time has come for all of us to address the issue of unilateral coercive measures comprehensively and effectively in the interest of the welfare of we, the peoples of the United Nations,” Gil added. He called on UN member states to refrain from “enacting, recognizing and/or implementing unilateral coercive measures to coerce the sovereign will of nations.”
He also emphasized the importance of lifting sanctions so that Venezuela and other countries can achieve their development goals.
“Countries should be able to develop their productive capacities,” he said. “We have the task of building a world of peace, it is our responsibility for future generations. Amid the persistence of coercive measures and their consequences, we express our commitment to a multilateral system and our determination to explore ways and means to be independent in line with international law. We have to identify ways and means to address the effect of unilateral coercive measures, develop a safe zone for trade, and ensure the development of our peoples.”
Moreover, Gil urged UN member states to present a report with their conclusions to monitor the imposition of unilateral measures and to study the effects and impacts, as well as to prevent the downplaying of the reality of the economic blockades in intergovernmental contexts, as the time has come to address the issue in a comprehensive manner.
“We call on international organizations to refrain from supporting or complying with these unilateral measures, and we reiterate our commitment to preserve and defend the United Nations Charter, for which we demand the lifting of all unilateral measures that exist in the world today,” he emphasized.
