The United Nations General Assembly approved, for the 33rd consecutive year, a resolution demanding an end to the economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed by the United States against Cuba. The vote took place on Wednesday, October 29, and reflected overwhelming international support for Cuba’s position: 165 countries voted in favor, while only seven voted against, and 12 abstained.
Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno RodrĂguez Parrilla, head of the Cuban delegation at the UN General Assembly, called the vote a clear expression of global condemnation of a brutal policy that is contrary to international law. In his remarks, he repudiated the new US representative’s discourse as “threatening and cynical,” also noting his ties to anti-Cuban groups based in Miami.
RodrĂguez expressed solidarity with the peoples of Jamaica, Haiti, and the Dominican Republic, affected by Hurricane Melissa, which also impacted Cuba, and thanked the international community for its expressions of support for Cuba. He added that Washington’s aggression “openly declares its goal of restricting Cuba’s trade relations” and that the UN General Assembly once again considered it as a sustained and systematic blockade.

Among the countries that opposed the resolution are the United States, Israel, Paraguay, Hungary, North Macedonia, Argentina, and Ukraine. The abstentions came from 12 countries, including Albania, Morocco, and Poland. The resolution was adopted amid growing international tensions, and most UN member states underscored the need for the US to respect the principles of sovereignty and non-interference.
Cuba Calls Upon International Community to Stop US Military Aggression Against Venezuela
The representative of Nicaragua reffered to the blockade as the gravest violation of human rights against the Cuban people. He pointed out that the US is completely isolated on this issue, being the only country to publicly defend the criminal policy. He also reiterated the global demand for Washington to remove Cuba from the dubious US list of state sponsors of terrorism.
The Cuban Foreign Ministry declared that the pressures exerted by the United States “were unable to change the verdict or conceal the irrefutable fact that the economic blockade is a weapon of aggression unacceptable to the international community.” The message underscored that the world continues to demand an end to that policy.

During the debate prior to the vote, various countries and regional blocs reiterated their condemnation of the blockade and demanded its immediate and unconditional lifting. The presentations all pointed out that the unilateral coercive measures severely undermine the economic development and well-being of the Cuban people and lack any legal or moral justification on the international stage.
The report presented by Cuba to the General Assembly stated that the damages caused by the blockade in the past year exceeded US $7.5 billion, representing a 49% increase compared to the previous period. Since 1992, the anti-blockade resolution has been endorsed almost unanimously, establishing itself as one of the most consistent positions in the UN’s recent history.
