Claudia Sheinbaum was sworn in as president of the United Mexican States earlier today. Sheinbaum’s inauguration took place in the Chamber of Deputies and will continue with a massive event in the capital’s Zócalo.
The new head of state of Mexico opened her speech by praising her predecessor, Andrés Manuel López Obrador: “History and the people have judged him as one of the greats—the most important political leader and social fighter in modern history. The most beloved president, only comparable to Lázaro Cárdenas. The one who began and ended his term with the most love from his people and, for millions, the best president of Mexico.”
With 118 senators and 466 deputies present in the Legislative Palace of San Lázaro, Sheinbaum was proclaimed as the first female president in the American nation. Representatives of the governments of Germany, the United States, Brazil, Canada, Ghana, Chile, Cuba, Colombia, Haiti, Honduras, Guatemala, Paraguay, and Belize attended; in total, representatives from 105 countries were present at the inauguration.
Hours before beginning her term, President Claudia Sheinbaum carried out 35 appointments of members of the incoming administration. She reported the appointment of officials from the outgoing administration, as well as some former members of that cabinet. She also announced the renewal of six officials in their positions.
At 5:00 p.m. (local time), the president was expected to leave the National Palace to salute the flag and attend a ceremony to hand over the baton of command before representatives from the 79 indigenous peoples of the country, and at 6:20 p.m. (legal time) she will issue a statement in which she will ratify the 100 points that will make up her government proposal. At 7:50 p.m. (local time), the official activities will be concluded.

Days before, it was established by presidential decree that the day of transition of the Executive Power, October 1 every six years, will be a mandatory day of rest in the country. According to the Federal Labor Law (LFT), those who have to work on this date must receive the salary corresponding to the workday plus double salary.
On Sunday, September 29, the president announced that after taking the oath of office as president of the Republic, she will begin a tour of Acapulco with her cabinet to meet with the governor of Guerrero, Evelyn Salgado, in order to evaluate and establish plans for the aid that this port requires due to the damage caused by the passage of Hurricane John, reported La Jornada.
