“There cannot be a Venezuelan, who is a candidate, who calls for invasions of the country by foreign countries,” said Jorge Rodríguez, president of Venezuela’s National Assembly (AN) this Tuesday.
During a debate in parliament, Rodríguez proposed that all electoral laws in the country be reviewed with the sole purpose of updating them to protect the people and eliminate abuses of the current law.
The highest representative of the legislative power pointed out that some laws that regulate political parties “have become obsolete in light of these times” and expressed his opinion that it is now appropriate to create a new Law of Electoral Processes.
“We cannot continue with a Law of Political Parties that is pre-constitutional and that has only received reforms after the Constitution was approved,” he said.

Rodríguez announced the creation of a Special Commission, which will be headed by Rodríguez himself, to request that all political parties and electoral movements that participated in the elections of July 28 enter into a political dialogue.
In this regard, he invited all the parties that participated in the elections of June 28 to debate the electoral laws on Thursday, October 3.
In Venezuela, he stated, there must be a Law of Political Parties that is sufficiently clear so that lawbreakers cannot run candidates: “How many parties are there today duly registered with the National Electoral Council?” He asked. “And of registered parties, how many comply with the established legal requirements and how many do not? Very few comply.”
Rodríguez noted that some parties use the electoral and political instruments provided by Venezuelan democracy to attack democracy itself “against people’s lives, against the assets of the Republic, and against the sacred soil of the Republic. That cannot continue to exist.”
“There cannot be a councilor, a mayor, a governor, a national deputy, or a president of the Republic who is subject to destruction and death… who calls for invasions by a foreign power into the country… who calls for the theft of the assets of the Republic abroad.”
Similarly, Rodríguez emphasized that no person who is corrupt can hold public office. “They cannot return to public office,” he reiterated.
He ratified statements issued by President Nicolás Maduro when he stated that there should be no dialogue with fascists but only dialogue with true democrats. “The extreme right always starts with lies in electoral processes,” said Rodríguez. “As in 2002, they have the terrible habit of not recognizing the electoral results of the CNE. I tell you that if you are not going to recognize the electoral institutions, do not participate.”
Likewise, Rodríguez reiterated the importance of debate and new proposals because, he said, these electoral laws “will be approved before the end of 2024 so that the next elections will be governed by the new electoral laws approved by the National Assembly of Venezuela.”
“Our aspiration must be that never again will a thief, a stateless person, or a fascist be a candidate for absolutely any elected office in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.
He clarified that one of the reasons Edmundo González left the country “was because Machado had him in precarious situations, with only US $700 a month for his expenses and those of his office.”
