Colombian Foreign Minister Luis Guillermo Murillo resigned from his post on Monday.
Murillo recently complete one year in office. Colombian local media began to circulate the news of Murillo’s resignation and suggested that he has aspirations for the presidency.
Murillo’s position in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will be occupied by Laura Sarabia, the current director of the Administrative Department of the Presidency (Dapre). Murillo’s resignation will take effect on February 1.
Sarabia, who will be the youngest official to hold this position in the history of Colombia, will base her agenda on preserving Colombia’s reputation on the international stage and consolidating its position in the region and the world.
In this regard, she explained that her administration will have four fundamental pillars: regional integration, a pragmatic relationship with the United States, strengthening diplomacy, and promoting sustainable development with businesspeople as strategic allies.
One of the challenges the future foreign minister will face is the relationship between Colombian President Gustavo Petro and his US counterpart, Donald Trump, who was inaugurated on Monday, January 20.
This will be the third position that Laura Sarabia has held during Gustavo Petro’s presidency, having first been head of the ministerial cabinet and later director of Dapre.
Venezuelan authorities had questioned Murillo’s credentials after the foreign minister issued statements amounting to interference in Venezuela’s internal affairs, aligning Colombia with Washington’s smear campaigns, particularly during the recent elections in Venezuela.

Changes in the cabinet
Murillo’s departure is not the only change within Petro’s cabinet, as Minister of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Mauricio Lizcano will also leave his post soon.
The administration also announced the departure of several Colombian ambassadors: Roy Barreras (United Kingdom), Guillermo Rivera (Brazil), Camilo Romero (Argentina), and Fredy León (Nicaragua).
