Former president of Argentina Cristina Fernández de Kirchner (CFK) singled out the director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Kristalina Georgieva, for supporting the government of Javier Milei and its neoliberal economic model, which she claims has deepened Argentina’s social crisis and eroded national sovereignty.
In a lengthy message on social media, the former president criticized Argentina’s current economic situation and foreign debt, as well as the austerity measures enacted by Milei and Georgieva.
“Cheers, Kristalina…,” she began, questioning Georgieva’s recent remarks expressing hope that Argentina “doesn’t stray from change” ahead of this year’s legislative elections.

“You know what’s going on, Kristalina? We’ve already heard that word here: ‘change,’” Fernández de Kirchner wrote, referencing former President Mauricio Macri’s campaign slogan. She argued that Macri’s “change” brought “adjustment, record debt (including US $45 billion owed to the IMF), capital flight, tariff hikes, falling wages, factory closures, and loss of sovereignty.”
She accused Milei and Georgieva of reviving this model in a “recharged version,” declaring: “this ‘change’ ruined Argentina—and now it has returned with Milei’s help.”
“Yes, I believe the ‘change’ is back… The one that suits you, Kristalina!” she added.
The IMF director had earlier praised Milei’s economic program, urging Argentina to maintain its current course through the upcoming legislative elections. Fernández de Kirchner, now leader of the Partido Justicialista, dismissed Milei as the IMF’s “best student,” citing a 16-month decline in trade, over 180,000 private-sector job losses, stagnant public and foreign investment, and insufficient export revenue to offset dollar outflows.

“I’ll warn you, Kristalina: sooner or later, the people will return,” CFK wrote. “They will find the way, the time, and the leaders to confront this impoverishment model you’ve promoted for decades.”
Fernández de Kirchner also criticized Milei’s conduct during Pope Francis’ funeral, calling his late arrival to the wake a “fake” and demanding: “did you arrive late for some other reason we Argentinians don’t know?”
